2016-2017 Middle School Computer Skills

Quarter Classes:
5th Grade:
Your child will spend one quarter (9 weeks) of their 5th grade year in the computer skills elective. Your child will receive a review of the keyboarding skills they started in Elementary School; but this is not the main focus. Our goal as a class is to give the students an introduction to using the computers for a variety of tasks that can be applied to every aspect of their education. The Chapters we will be covering are:
Keyboarding Techniques, Computer Safety, Word Processing (Word 2013), and Computer Software/Hardware Basics
6th Grade:
Your child will spend one quarter (9 weeks) of their 6th grade year in the computer skills elective. We will begin with a review of the word processing skills they started in the 5th grade elective and move into an overview of the following topics. The Chapters we will be covering are:
Word Processing Review (Word 2013), Spreadsheets (Excel 2013), Computer Ethics, Copyright and Fair Use, Databases (Access 2013),
Presentation Software (PowerPoint 2013)
Semester Classes:
Microsoft Information Technology (MSIT):
This class will be a semester long (18 weeks) class with a mix of 7th and 8th grade students. This course will utilize the basic Microsoft Office skills the students were exposed to during their 5th and 6th grade quarter classes. We will move into advanced uses of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, powerpoint, desktop publishing, as well as Microsoft Onenote. Students will create their own theme (i.e. service business, hobby, sport) and use that same creation throughout the class to create mail merge documents; formal letters; budgets using formulas and functions; create and analyze spreadsheet charts; create database tables, forms, and reports; create brochures and business cards, etc. They will end the class with a presentation to showcase all of their work. The goal of this course is to get an in-depth understanding of Microsoft Office and to apply this to real life situations.
Digital Communication:
This class will be a semester long (18 weeks) class with a mix of 7th and 8th grade students. This course will explore various facets of communicating with all types of digital media. We will explore graphic design, photography, photo editing, videography, video editing, cinematography, website design, and coding. Microsoft Publisher, Photoscape, and Windows Movie Maker will be used, as well as various other software programs. The goal of this course is to get an in-depth and hands on understanding of communicating in a digital world. Over the semester students will create a portfolio of work demonstrating their understanding of the course.
